Freddy Garcés Highlights the Role of Science and Innovation in the Transformation of the Sugarcane Sector

Freddy Garcés, Executive Director of Cenicaña, delivered a historic address at the ISSCT Congress, tracing the evolution of Colombia’s sugarcane sector and emphasizing the transformative power of science and innovation in driving its growth.
He highlighted how the sector has consolidated itself through the development of sugarcane varieties adapted to diverse environments and weather conditions, showcasing the critical role of research and scientific advancement. “This is what science does,” Garcés remarked, underscoring the importance of pilot centers in defining the specific conditions required for each variety, providing a clear vision for the future of agriculture.
To support this vision, Cenicaña has implemented advanced monitoring systems that provide statistical data on the impact and water quality of more than 40 river basins. Garcés described this as part of the transition to Agriculture 4.0, where data drives decision-making and unlocks new opportunities.
At the core of this transformation are over 1,000 sensors deployed across the country, forming the backbone of GOTA, Cenicaña’s integrated network. These sensors, together with more than 900 rain gauges, deliver real-time data to optimize field management.
“Our solutions at Cenicaña are not confined to the fields; we take them directly to the mills to deliver better results,” Garcés explained. Among these solutions is Ceniclima, a powerful climate prediction tool that forecasts daily precipitation and weather conditions up to three months in advance.
Innovation, Garcés emphasized, is embedded in Cenicaña’s DNA. Tools such as the GeoPortal, which identifies productivity gaps; Gotas, which sends real-time operational and logistical data to enhance harvest efficiency; and Analyzer, the upcoming platform that will consolidate data from Datacane, are transforming how the industry operates.
Datacane, he explained, integrates a comprehensive dashboard of over 180 variables, enabling mills to make informed, data-driven decisions. “This is the essence of our work—turning science into actionable solutions for the sector,” Garcés said.
One of Cenicaña’s greatest achievements, he noted, is the transfer of these technologies to industry partners, extending the network of innovation beyond Cenicaña itself and strengthening the entire sugarcane sector.
“With every new tool, every new data point, and every collaborative effort, we are building a future where technology, sustainability, and productivity go hand in hand,” Garcés concluded.
