DataCane by Cenicaña: optimization of efficiency and maintenance in sugarcane mills through Industry 4.0

During the ISSCT 2025 Congress, Colombian researcher Julio Antonio Calpa Pantoja presented the paper “DataCane by Cenicaña: optimization of efficiency and maintenance in sugarcane mills through Industry 4.0”, sharing the progress and results of using digital technologies to transform sugar mill operations.

In his presentation, Calpa Pantoja described how DataCane, a platform developed by Cenicaña, integrates Industry 4.0 tools –such as advanced data analytics, real-time monitoring, and artificial intelligence– to optimize production processes.

Key achievements highlighted included:

  • Real-time monitoring and analysis of equipment and processes, enabling early detection of failures and significantly reducing downtime.
  • Operational efficiency improvements, supporting strategic decision-making with accurate, up-to-date data.
  • Optimized maintenance planning, prioritizing preventive actions that have lowered costs and extended equipment lifespan.

Calpa Pantoja emphasized that the implementation of DataCane in several Colombian sugar mills has resulted in operational savings, increased equipment availability, and substantial improvements in key performance indicators (KPIs). He concluded by stressing the importance of moving towards an Industry 4.0-driven sugarcane agribusiness, where digitalization and innovation serve as pillars for sustainable and competitive growth.
